IMAGE QUALITY: Film vs Digital

Which provides a better presentation, film or digital? Quality can vary widely with each format, as depicted in the following chart:

Some key points are made clear:
- 35mm presentations have the widest range of quality. When done right, 35mm looks fantastic, but when done poorly, it looks terrible. This fact is one of the key arguments in support of digital. The worst digital presentation is better than the worst film presentation.

- The quality of a 35mm presentation is limited when a 2k digital intermediate is used by the filmmakers (or digital photography).

- A good 4k digital presentation rivals a good 35mm presentation.

(Note that 4k digital projectors are extremely rare. Most of the thousands of digital projectors in current use are 2k projectors. Additionally, 4k digital projectors are backwards compatible and may be projecting 2k movies to unsuspecting audiences.)

This chart only compares the quality of the projected image. Other issues, such marks on the screen, audience disruptions, and annoying commercials are not affected by the projection format.

Movie Theatre Reviews advocates the viewing 35mm (or 70MM) films at quality theatres, for the best possible presentation. For more information, read The Cons of Digital Projection .

Is 4k going to spread? If so, then it seems like you would be advocating 70 mm and 4k- since 4k would mean even bad presentations would be better than what you often do encounter now on 35m.

As with all changing technology, some of the early steps won't hold up, but if 6k is on the horizon and will start to rival 70 mm then it would seem like pushing a faster adoption of digital would make sense.

I still have an old style TV because most of the Plasma and LCD TVs I see in stores and bars seem pixely and blurry. I have seen properly configured setups that far surpass my setup, but that is not the norm. While I continue to prefer the older format personally, I am an advocate of the new technology because I can see that it has the potential to be much better.

"Is 4k going to spread?"

Who knows. I doubt that the theatres that have spent tens of thousands of dollars PER screen for 2k projectors in the past few years will be spending money on 4k projectors.

Most cinemas operate on very thin margins, and the costs of digital may be more than they can bear.

For only a few hundred dollars, they could train their staff to operate their 35mm equipment correctly, and achieve superior presentations.

Wyliemoney, why don't you grow a pair and get a nice TV?

Prefer the old format? What is there to prefer about a shitty resolution?
